Thank you to all of the parents who attended the Parent/Teacher Interviews. I realize that these dates and times do not match everyone schedules therefore if you are wanting to meet please send me an email and we will try to schedule a time and date. (FYI: Mondays and Tuesdays are more convenient for me).

Mrs. Pearson will be in the classroom all Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30am-11:15am. We felt this change would enable for an easier transition for the students and allow for greater academic success. I will be all day Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Thursdays 11:15 am - 2:30 pm. Mrs. Pearson will still be teaching the same subject matter.

Students will be receiving their Number Sense Math Test tomorrow and we will be moving onto Comparing and Ordering Numbers then Addition and Subtraction.

Monday, September 19

Good Evening,

Students will have brought home a Weekly Review. Please read the directions. I want to reiterate that this is meant to be challenging but doable! Meaning if your child is crying or it's a huge struggle to get them to do it please talk to me so we can determine best how to meet the learning needs of your child. The Weekly Review will always go home on Mondays and is due at the end of the week. This week's review is due Thursday, Sept. 22 as September 23 is a Pro-D Day.

Our school Terry Fox Run is on Thursday at 11:30am and if possible please bring in a toonie for Terry. If students do not return their permission slips they will have to run within the school grounds. The intermediate students run down Dallas Drive to Todd Hill Crescent. All the way to soccer fields, then on the path at the soccer fields back to the school.

School Supply & other forms are due

I am still collecting the "Getting to Know You Form" if you have not yet filled it out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Students have began recorder and they will need to bring their recorders for Wednesday.

We are stressing students having a GROWTH mindset in learning rather than a fixed mindset. We will be talking about this all year long. Click on the Star Wars link to watch the following video which demonstrates this concept: Star Wars

Bonjour,

Please remember to sign up to receive these messages by email (it's at the very bottom)!

It is a pleasure to be teaching your child. Please read the newsletter I sent home today. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me cdross@sd73.bc.ca or call the school 250-573-3261 or drop by Room 205 (Mr. Conroy's old room).

In your package was a Get to Know You, your homework as one student mentioned! This informal form allows me to get to know you, your child, your routines and your expectations a little better prior to our interviews in October.

School newsletters were also sent home.

Any school forms and school supply forms have also been sent home. As well as the Terry Fox Run permission slip as the intermediate students do run off of the school grounds for this.

Ice Cream sales are happening tomorrow, $2.00 per cone.

Students will be filling out agendas at the end of the day and my expectation is they will be initialled  by you as this ensures you know what's happening in our class. The agendas also allow for communication between us as I know you may not always be able to come to the school. Students also received a binder which will allow them to take home any forms or homework and their agenda can snap right into it! Just makes it so you don't end up with a whole bunch of crumpled up papers!

We do have some classroom pets; a guinea pig named Bacon, a hamster named Rosalita Hammy Oreo Ross Jr. and some fish.

I am very excited to be part of the Technology Cohort for SD#73. What this means is Ms. Saemerow and myself have 30 chromebooks and 7 iPads to use throughout the year with our class! This is amazing! I do need students to bring in headphones and if they would like a mouse (some students do not like to use the trackpad). I am also looking into setting up Fresh Grade which is an outline portfolio therefore you will be able to see what is happening in our class!

I am also a Technology/Inquiry Coordinator for our school which is why Mrs.Pearson is in the classroom on Monday & Tuesday from 11:15-2:30 & Thursday from 8:30-11:15. She will be teaching French, SS, Math and PE. Mrs. Pearson is a PE specialist and fluent in French! I am excited to start using our green screen in the classroom.

A big shift in thinking this year in our classroom is one from a Fixed Mindset "Luke & Darth Vader" to one that is a Growth Mindset "Yoda". Ask your child to explain this to you.

Bonne nuit,

Mrs. Ross

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT LIST
When choosing clothing, please keep in mind that the McQueen Lake centres are at a higher elevation than Kamloops (1000 m or 3000 ft) so the temperature will be cooler. It is still common to see students under dressed for damp or cooler conditions. Students should not bring candy, gum, radios, or electronic games.
CLOTHING - Light jacket or shell and a lightweight sweater/sweatshirt.
Long pants with preference to athletic pant style made of nylon or polyester, etc.
Poncho or rainwear – at the very least their leaders should have some garbage bags to provide emergency ponchos.
Footwear: Runners with socks are good enough but no open-toe footwear.
Sunscreen (on in the morning is good enough) and hat.
EQUIPMENT - Bag lunch– no candy, gum, or junk food please. Please do not eat as you travel. Eat at designated areas only so garbage and scent can be controlled.
Insect repellent - late May-July is the worst – non aerosol to keep it out of lungs in a group setting. - Cameras and binoculars – optional - at owner’s risk.
Water bottle - Pack sack to carry water bottle, lunch etc.
Pencil
Friendly Reminders Please do not let students eat as they walk along the trails. Any food or food wrappers will attract animals, such as bears, to the day-centres.

May is almost over! I apologize for being away this last two days. This is a quick note to remind everyone that we have gymnastics tomorrow Thursday, May 18 and our bake sale is on Friday. The bake sale is a fundraising event to pay for Charlotte Thompson.  As our school is nut aware please do not send any baked goods containing nuts. If you are having trouble of coming up with an idea of what to bake here is an excellent resource shared to me by a parent: Bake Better Bites
http://www.bchealthyliving.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/BakeBetterBites2014.pdf

Next, Tuesday, May 24 is the Zone Track Meet at Hillside Stadium for all of the students who qualified.

In the classroom, we have begun our literature circles and students are reading either Charlotte’s Web, Owls in the Family, Holes or Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing.
Majority of students have finished their rough draft for their fractured fairy tale and are in the process of completing their final presentation for it.  In science, we have been learning about matter. Whoa! In math we have begun our division unit. Students will find this concept frustrating if they do not have a strong understanding of basic multiplication facts. While completing their assignments students do have access to a multiplication table but if they know these facts by heart it makes the division concepts easier to understand. Mathplayground has several games devoted to multiplication and division facts as well as math prodigy.

I know this is a busy time of year and sometimes students do not always have time for homework and reading. But, it is important that they do read at least 15 minutes each day and even better if they get a chance to practice reading out loud.

Mark your Calendars:
Wednesday, June 8 as our class, Ms. Saemerow and Mr. Ruddick’s class will be travelling to the McQueen Lake day center to participate in several survival skill activities.  I will be needing parent volunteers for this day in order to make it a success.

Quick Classroom Update:

Congratulations to Leif and Nick for earning Bronze Medals at the Mainline Regional Science Fair!

For the next 2 ½ weeks, we are very fortunate to have Charlotte Thompson joining our classroom. This is my first time doing this and I am very excited to take this journey with the students. In order to make this experience successful we will need parent volunteers for certain dates. Once the dates are solidified I will send out another email. There is a cost associated with Charlotte Thompson therefore we will be having a bake sale in the near future.

Today, we will had our spelling as usual therefore the spelling post-test will happen on Friday. Spelling words can always be found at http://www.spellingcity.com/chelcyross/.  Remember on short weeks we do not do spelling. Also, today we participated in our First Nations rotations; the three stations were a Pictograph Cave, Salmon Dance with Mr. Camille, and an informational video on The Great White Spirit Bear.

Tomorrow is YPC and Ice Cream is being sold for $2.00
